Message of support from Annette McCaul

What needs to be done to finally get the message through to the decision makers in our Town that Portlaoise needs a Sports Centre and that this Centre needs to facilitate one of the best All Inclusive Basketball Clubs in Ireland the Portlaoise Panthers.

I’m 62 and played Basketball for Portlaoise in the 70”s under legend coaches such as Pat Dalton & Pat Critchley and in those years we too trained in St Mary’s Hall. We had our big moments winning the odd championship but nothing compared to the success of the Portlaoise Panthers of today who have reached new heights over the years and now have hundreds of kids banging on the doors to become members but after almost 50 years the club has massively outgrown St Mary’s Hall which makes it impossible to cater for the demand forcing them into having to rent out several locations to hold their training. This is not sustainable and the Local Authority needs to accept that.

I’m calling on my generation and the younger generation to pull together to ensure our public representatives finally see the need and not just see it but do something about it. It will be an absolute disaster for our Community if a Basketball Centre is not included in the plans for the allocated site off the Stradbally road. We all need to lobby every public representative not just in Portlaoise but throughout the County. Use every social media platform to get this message out. Ugie Ugie Ugie!!! A look at Sports Club facilities in the Portlaoise Area

Make no mistake we are really big fans of all sports big and small here and love to see every one do so well. But as you can see from the graphic below, it is striking just how far behind we are with respect to other sports. The clubs below have worked hard for what they have and each deserve only the best. We too would love a place of our own, a couple of courts to practice on, a place to hang up our trophies and some photos to remember our past.

Property search for Laois Basketball Arena

The Club Development Team have been searching for a suitable property to rent or buy and contacting local estate agents and agencies. The broad requirements are for a 50 meter by 50 meter building with a ceiling height of approximately 7-8 meters high. Please contact us at info@portlaoisepanthers.com if you know of anywhere that could be developed into a basketball venue and we can share more details of the requirements with you.

Formation of Portlaoise Panthers Development Team

For a number of years members of the clubs Executive Committee have met with most of Co Laois public representatives and Laois County Council management seeking assistance to secure the future viability and development of our club by securing an independent facility.

For 2021 a new Development Team consisting of current and former members of the Executive Committee has been formed solely focused on progressing a new home for basketball in Portlaoise. The team members are;

Seamus Dooley - Chairperson Executive Committee
Paul O’Connell - Executive Committee
Emma Scully - Club Secretary and Executive Committee
Peter O’Sullivan
Lynda Scully
Fintan Kennedy

Our new Blog for Laois Basketball Arena or #LBA will keep you in the loop on our progress and provide lots of background information on this project.
